Family Math Afternoons at the Kingston Library
Join us at the Kingston Library on Saturday, October 17, 2pm to 4pm, for our monthly Family Math Afternoon. Each session features hands-on math, including math puzzles, logic games, mathematical problem solving, and a mathematical artifact that you can make and take home. The sessions are suitable for all ages, especially for middle school and upper elementary school students who enjoy math.
This month: The Mathematics of Gerrymandering
From: America’s most gerrymandered congressional districts, Washington Post
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/05/15/americas-most-gerrymandered-congressional-districts/
Gerrymandering is when electoral districts are drawn to favor one political party over another. We’ll learn by doing. Can you Gerrymander five equal-size districts onto this map of 25 voters so that the minority of blue voters can win?
We’ll face these and other Gerrymandering challenges on Saturday. The result will be some insight into how Gerrymandering can distort electoral results.
Time: Saturdays, 2-4pm
Dates: October 17, November 21, December 12, January 23, February 20, March 13, April 17
Location: 61 Crown Street in Uptown Kingston
Cost: Free!
Parking: The Kingston Library has ample free parking available.
Audience: all ages, especially especially for middle school and upper elementary school students who enjoy math. And their families!
