Happy Pi Day! Today, March 14, is denoted as 3/14, same as the first digits of π = 3.14… (If you write the date as 14 March, then the date 14/3 is not at all exciting. And unfortunately there is no 31st day of April to write as 31/4.) Today is also the International Day of Mathematics.
Celebrate math with us tomorrow (Saturday, 3/15) at our Family Math Afternoon! We meet at the Kingston Library (61 Crown Street) from 2pm to 4pm, and will provide math puzzles, logic games, a hands-on math artifact to make and take home, and some mathematical problem solving that we’ll work through together.
Bring your parents, children, younger and older siblings, and friends for a mathemagical experience!
Earlier this week we celebrated Pi Day with several screenings of the COUNTED OUT documentary at Bard College, at the Kingston Library, and at SUNY NP. The film makes the case that we have a math crisis in this country, mathematical literacy is more important than ever, and there may be solutions in how we approach math education in our schools and beyond.

Our practice for the Purple Comet Math Contest continues on Saturday, March 29. The contest itself is on Saturday, April 26. We are still accepting new students (Middle School and High School). Please sign up below.

Radical Equations
The COUNTED OUT film was dedicated to Bob Moses, founder of the Algebra Project. Moses was a civil rights leader who became a math education visionary. He developed a 5-step curricular process leading from a shared experience to symbolic representation of mathematics.

The Family Math Afternoon
Our monthly family math afternoon is back! For middle school students and their families, the session features Engaging Math Problems, Logic Puzzles, and Thinking Games! You will enjoy a selection of engrossing and hands-on math activities. The mathematical fun will be infinite!
No prior registration is needed for the Family Math Afternoon. We meet in the Community Room.
Location: Kingston Library, 61 Crown Street, Kingston NY 12401
Schedule: Saturdays, 2-4pm
Dates: February 15, March 15, April 19, and May 17 in 2025
Parking: The library has plentiful free parking
Parent’s Math Workshop
We are having a delayed start for our pilot Parent’s Math Workshop that will run alongside the family math afternoon. For parents who would like to develop a math friendly home environment and invite their young ones into the world of mathematics. Space in the workshop is limited, so please sign up below.
Purple Comet!
The Purple Comet! Math Meet is an annual and international team mathematics competition designed for middle and high school students that has been held every year since 2003. Teams of from one to six students compete by submitting solutions to a list of mathematics problems. The problems range in difficulty from fairly easy to extremely challenging. There are too many problems and too little time for any one student to solve them all, so teamwork is critical!
We will compete in the Mixed Teams category (teams whose members attend more than one school or are home schooled) for both the middle school and the high school contest. levels. You don’t need to make every practice to compete, as the competition is quite flexible. Please get in touch if you have questions.
Our practice sessions at Bard College have begun, and we’re picking up momentum. The next practices are on Saturdays: March 1 and March 29. Our main competition date is on Saturday, April 26. Please click on the registration button for more information:
