How Challenging is the AMC 8?
It is useful to think of the 25 problems in sets of 5. The “First Five” are an appropriate challenge for alert students who are at or above grade level. In fact, solving just 5 of the 25 problems correctly is an achievement worth celebrating! The “Second Five” problems are usually just out of reach for students who have not practiced previous contests for speed and accuracy. And they keep getting harder; the “Fifth Five” problems should be considered inaccessible to all but a few middle school students around the country.
Perhaps surprisingly, all the AMC 8 problems are generally understandable. Reading their solutions after the contest can be an illuminating and expanding experience.
