Last Chance to Register for the AMC 8!
Dear Math Friends,
Happy New Year! We've already started our first event in 2024, the AMC 8 Math Contest. If you have a middle school student who is interested in this mathematically rigorous and challenging event, now is the time!
Passed: AMC 8 in New Paltz on Thursday, January 18
Available: AMC 8 at Bard College on Wednesday, January 24
We don't recommend math contests to most students. The downside is that the problems go far above and beyond the school curriculum, and there is very intense time pressure. We are surprised when students, even those who are at the top of their class, solve 40% of the problems, unless math enrichment and problem solving is part of how they engage with math regularly. This can be discouraging.
The benefit is that bright students who are not sufficiently challenged in math class are stretched and stimulated by what they experience on the contests. For these students, this is a motivation to develop their mathematical knowledge, speed, and accuracy.
We have other things in the planning stage for this spring and summer, so please keep an eye on your inbox for updates about CAMP, family math afternoons in Kingston, Pi Day, and more.
Mathematically,
Japheth
