Each month we offer puzzles and games, outside-the-box math problems, and a math artifact to make and take home. Celebrate Pi Day with us! No registration needed, just come on by.

Pi Day is a silly celebration of the symbol used by mathematicians to represent the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Celebrate at the Kingston Library with actual PIE! Everyone is encouraged to bring a pie to share. It can be any pie you want to bring…and you can have more than 3.1415926535 pieces. (Please be sure to write down ingredients for people with dietary restrictions and allergies).

CAMP applications continue!
Join us for our 10th Creative & Analytical Math Program. It's a one-week math immersion program for math-loving students (currently) in grades 5 through 8. CAMP is not a remedial program. You'll see math that you won't experience in school.
Dates: Monday (6/26) to Friday (6/30), 2023
Times: 9:00am to 3:30pm each day
Location: Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY
Audience: Students in grades 5 through 8 who love math.
Cost: $450 for the week. Lunch is included. Need-based scholarships available.

MAGPIES is hosting their first ever Girls Math Circle! They invite 4th–7th grade girls to join them three Saturday mornings this spring semester to learn about Rubik’s Cube Mosaics, EvenQuads, and Magic Squares!

PHYSICS RESEARCH INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT BARD COLLEGE
Internship Details
This internship is an opportunity for two high school students to learn and work in a physics laboratory at Bard College, Annandale, NY. The successful candidates will engage in research in optics and gain experience in various laboratory activities related to lasers, optics, vacuum systems, data analysis and simulations. The duration of the program is up to 8 weeks (June 5th – July 28th, depending on student schedule). This is a paid internship ($550 per week), but no room and board will be provided. Students will be required to be in the lab daily, Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. The applicants need to demonstrate interest in the sciences, but no prior experience is required. Candidates who have taken courses in any areas of science will receive priority.
We particularly encourage applicants from underrepresented groups.

Research Description
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatories (LIGO) are large astronomical instruments that has given scientists the ability to observe the universe in a completely new way. Unlike conventional telescopes, which use the light emitted by stars and galaxies to learn their properties and their place in the universe, GW detectors use gravitational waves (GW), which are similarly emitted by many astrophysical objects. Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime that travel to Earth and cause the detectors to essentially change in size. To observe this change the LIGO detectors require state-of-the-art mirrors, which are used to sense the stretching and contraction of space and time. Improvements in mirror design will allow observers to look further into space and detect more of these GW signals.
Work in our optics laboratory at Bard college aims in pushing the mirror technology by utilizing light scattering as a tool to study mirror coatings. Specifically, an important aspect of the quality of a mirror is the presence of defects which scatter light and inhibit the operation of the LIGO detectors. This research is designed to study defects on mirrors so that it will be possible to ultimately improve LIGO’s sensitivity.
