This is Japheth Wood, the director of the Bard Math Circle. You’ve been receiving our email newsletters, but today I wanted to email you more directly and ask for your support of math enrichment.
In March 2020, all of our programs moved online or were cancelled. Now in 2022, we are moving back to real life, and could use your help. Would you make a gift to the Bard Math Circle on #GivingTuesday, November 29?

This past June, we successfully brought our Creative and Analytical Math Program (CAMP) back to Bard College’s secluded campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, after 2 summers on Zoom. We’ve also restarted our monthly Math Family Afternoons at the Kingston Library, the annual math contests on campus, and are making plans for more in-person math enrichment.
During this transition back to normal, I’ve reconnected with many parents of our pre-pandemic students, and sometimes from the students themselves, now further along in their educational path. What they’ve told me is touching and inspiring; that we’ve made a difference in children’s lives, and a positive impact in their relationship to mathematics.
Our inquisitive approach to learning math and support for students taking on challenges and risks has been powerful. Our focus is on the middle school years, a delicate time, when many students turn away from math for a variety of reasons.
This year has felt like we are starting everything anew. Although we did great work on Zoom, being in-person is where we need to be.
