Bring your parents, bring your kids, bring a beloved but broken item to be fixed or mended for free!—including zippers!—by skilled experts who are also your neighbors, and a DIY demo for smartphones.
And bring your math-loving self to a place where problem-solving rules!
The Bard Math Circle will have fun and insightful π Day activities for kids of all ages (including parents):
Computing the value of π with string
A paper craft activity that explains why the area of a circle is π r2
Free-hand circle drawing contest
Investigating the famous Buffon Needle Problem

(Kingston, NY) Kingston Repair Cafe & Bike Clinic returns to Redeemer Lutheran
Church, ready to fix/mend your household items and tune-up your bike for free.
The spring Repair Cafe Kingston is Saturday, March 14 between the hours of 11:00AM and
3:00PM. The location is the community hall at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 104
Wurts Street, in the Rondout neighborhood in Kingston.
Repair Cafe & Bike Clinic is free a community-wide event, with skilled volunteers
who provide repairs for all kinds of household items: mechanical, electrical and
electronic devices. Woodworking and jewelry repairs. Clothing & textile mending
and even zipper repair thanks to Michelle Elise the “Zipper Wizard”! Toys and
stuffed animals. Vince Murray will bring his welding truck for metal repairs--
including high-temperature aluminum welding. Bicycle tune-ups and basic repairs
are provided by Bike-Friendly Kingston and the YMCA's “Bike It” program.
Plus, do you want to know more about how your smart phone works? Maybe
even learn how to fix it yourself? Jennifer O’Donnell will demonstrate how to diagnose common problems using the free online resource called iFixit. It doesn’t take a genius! So bring your smartphone and learn about the digital device that is such a big part of your life. The DIY Demo will take place at 1:00 PM, but Jennifer will be there the whole time to answer questions.
Coffee and tea are free at Repair Cafes, and home-baked sweet and savory treats
and fruit are available for a small donation. So look around your house, find
something that’s broken and bring it!
“Our church is proud to host Repair Cafe as a fun way to help our neighbors repair
things that might otherwise waste away in the landfill,” says Redeemer Lutheran’s
Dan Wingard.
The Kingston Repair Café is co-sponsored by Kingston Transition and Kingston’s
Climate Smart Commission. Repair Cafes are an “action item” that earn points for
Kingston toward New York State’s Climate Smart Communities program. Repair
Cafes reduce waste, build skills and create community.
The first Repair Café in Kingston was organized by Kingston Transition in June
2014. Kingston Transition is part of the international Transition movement that
initiates grassroots community projects to build local resilience.

Girls' Adventures in Math! (GAIM)
Register your team for Girls' Adventures in Math! Designed for girls in grades 3–8, this contest has always brought an energetic crowd to Bard College. GAIM is a team-based comic book math competition that features great women from history. Get your teams together!
Registration is open now and the contest will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2020.
Get ready for the Purple Comet Math Meet!
The Purple Comet! Math Meet is a team mathematics competition designed for middle and high school students. Teams of from one to six students compete by solving a list of mathematics problems. The problems range in difficulty from fairly easy to extremely challenging. Mark your calendars now! Registration will open soon.

The Creative and Analytical Math Program
Dates: Monday through Friday, August 3–7, 2020
Time: 9:00am to 3:30pm each day
Location: The idyllic Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson
For: Students currently in grades 5 through 8
Entering its 7th summer in 2020, the Creative and Analytical Math Program (CAMP) is a non-residential academic math enrichment opportunity for students who want to explore challenging math in a relaxed setting. Engaging classes and activities are led by experienced educators and undergraduate math majors. We emphasize hands-on math, teamwork, outside-the-box thinking and creative problem-solving.
The application form will be ready by early April, with April 30 as the priority deadline (followed by rolling admissions). Please join our email list so that we can contact you with updates.
