It's almost spring, and we have plenty of great math programs coming up. Please read below for announcements of some wonderful math opportunities for all!
Math Circle Meetups
Come hang out with Bard undergraduates and other math enthusiasts to play games, solve puzzles, and work on some enriching problem solving based on an exciting mathematical theme!
This semester we have two Meetups for students to attend at the library in Tivoli. The event in March will be focused on number theory.
Our Math Circle Meetups are run on a drop-in basis and registration is not required.
Dates: Two Saturdays, March 2nd and April 27th
Time: 12:30–2:00 pm
Location: Tivoli Free Library, 86 Broadway, Tivoli, NY 12583
For: Students, grades 5–9
Competitions
Girls' Adventures in Math
GAIM is a themed math competition, followed by strategy-based games. Teams of students will work on challenging problems, contextualized in a comic book with the stories of four pioneering women from history. Join us on Saturday, April 27 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Schools may register as many teams as they like in one of two divisions: Upper Elementary (Grades 3–5) or Middle (Grades 6–8).
The final registration deadline for GAIM is March 15. All new participating Title 1 schools may register one team free using the coupon code MARIE11 when they register. Last year's teams have been contacted with a similar special offer.
Purple Comet! Math Meet
The Purple Comet Contest is a team-based math competition for middle school and high school teams.
Join us for the contest on Sunday, April 7 and prepare in advance with us at our March 23rd and March 30th prep sessions. Registration will open soon.
Results from Recent Contests
2018 AMC 8
Twenty four students came to Bard on November 13, 2018 for the AMC 8 contest. The top performing schools were J. Watson Bailey Middle School in Kingston and Linden Ave Middle School in Red Hook. Click here for the full summary, including the top individual scores.
2019 AMC 10/12B
Twenty five students enjoyed the AMC 10B and AMC 12B contests on February 13, 2019. The results will appear soon on our website. Top scoring students will be invited to the AIME II (American Invitational Math Exam) on March 21.
The Putnam Exam
A hearty congratulations to the Bard College Putnam Team, which placed 371st in the USA on the 2018 Putnam Exam. This is an extremely challenging exam of two parts. Each 3 hour part has 6 proof-style problems at the highest level of undergraduate mathematics. Almost 5,000 students across the country took the exam. The top ranking schools were Harvard, MIT, UCLA, Columbia and Stanford.

CAMP
Our 6th summer of the Creative and Analytical Math Program will run from Monday–Friday, August 26–30, 2019. CAMP is for students in grades 5–8 who want to explore challenging math in a relaxed setting. Registration will open in mid-March!
Rubik's Cube Club
Take the Bard College Rubik's Cube Team Challenge!
Teams of 8 students collectively solve 25 3×3 and/or 25 2×2 Rubik’s Cubes
Students from registered teams may also compete to solve 3×3 and/or 2×2 Rubik’s Cubes
The Challenge: Saturday, May 11, 2019, 1 PM-4 PM at Bard College
Registration Deadline: Saturday, April 27, 2019
Your team of 8 needs a dedicated coach who will register the team and read the Eligibility and Tournament Rules.
If you're in NYC on March 12, join Daniel Rose-Levine at the Museum of Mathematics for his workshop "How to Solve the Rubik’s Cube — All Six Sides!"
Daniel is the Rubik’s-Cube-with-feet world record holder, was on our CAMP staff in 2017, and was a Bard Math Circle student for many years.

Girls Math Club
The Girls Math Club is going strong! They recently studied systems of linear equations using oreo and triple-double oreo cookies to figure out the cost, calories, and the weight of a single filling and a single wafer. The club meets once per month on Sunday afternoons during the school year. Each monthly meeting is full of smiles, laughter and math!
The application to join the Girls Math Club for next year will go out over the summer. Please contact girlsmathclub@gmail.com for more information.
The Girls Math Club is a project funded by the Trustee Leader Scholar program at Bard.
